Nan-e Shirini

Nan-e Shirini (Persian Sugar Cookies)


  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 tsp. almond extract
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp. lemon extract


  1. Preheat oven to 235F.
  2. Sift together 2 cups flour and 1 tsp. baking powder in a small mixing bowl.
  3. Place your shortening in a microwave safe mixing bowl and heat for about 10-15 seconds. Stir.
  4. Slowly add in the sugar while stirring it all together.
  5. Mix in 2 egg yolks, vanilla, almond, and lemon extracts. Mix wet ingredients well.
  6. Slowly add your dry ingredients and blend with the yellow paste you made.
  7. Form into balls.
  8. Bake for about 20 minutes.
  9. Allow to cool completely before handling.
